Alternator converts power from the petrol engine to electrical energy.
That is to keep the battery fully charged.
Is your alternator really bad?
Very often the alternator fails in stages and you can go a long time on a limping alternator.
Before recommending a new alternator we perform these tests:
- Test 1: Load test on the alternator.
Replace: If the voltage readings are all below specification. - Test 2: Check the belts.
Replace: If they are old and cracked or possibly slipping. - Test 3: Measure the voltage at the alternator connector or at the battery.
Replace: If the readings are the same at both places - no voltage drop in the system.
